Funeral Arrangements for Dale R Long ,Paramedic Supervisor

The Vermont EMS community is saddened by the loss of Dale R. Long, who died of injuries from a motor vehicle crash while transporting a patient on Monday afternoon June 15th, 2009. Dale was the 1998 Vermont EMS Advanced Rescuer of the Year and had recently been honored as Bennington Rescue Squad's member of the year and a "Star of Life" by the American Ambulance Association. In addition to Bennington Rescue Squad, he had also served over the years with other squads in EMS District 10 and 12.
In keeping with the wishes of Dale and his family, funeral arrangements will include full participation from the emergency response community. The following are logistical details of the planned services. Visiting Hours- will be held on Friday June 19th from 1700 to 2000 hours at the Brewster Funeral Home, 34 Park Place, Manchester, VT 053255. Directions- From Route 7 North or South, take Exit 4 and follow Route 30 towards Manchester Village. Turn right on Center Hill Road .1/2 mile. Turn right on Park Place and the funeral home is on your right. Parking is available across Rte 7a in the church parking lot.
Staging for the Memorial Service Procession - The Bennington Rescue Squad will be organizing the line- up of emergency vehicles. The processional of emergency vehicles will travel from Manchester VT to Southern Vermont College in Bennington. Line up for processional will be at the entrance ramp (Exit 4) to the high speed portion of Southbound Rte 7 in Manchester VT at 0800 hrs. Units are invited to send marked emergency vehicles for the processional. The procession will start when the entourage escorting Dale passes the line up and will proceed to Southern Vermont College in Bennington after passing the Squad Headquarters on McKinley Street. Memorial Services- The memorial service will be held on Saturday June 20th at 1000 hrs at the Southern Vermont College in Bennington. The service will be in the gymnasium with seating for approximately 600 persons and standing room for an additional 400. After the service, there will be a reception in the same location.
Parking: Parking for Emergency Vehicles will be at the Gym Parking Lot. Other attendees are asked to park in the dormitory parking lot across the street. Should additional parking be required, a shuttle will be available from
Uniform- Dress uniforms are appropriate if available. For organizations that do not have formal dress uniforms, duty uniforms are appropriate. Civilian dress is also welcome for individuals.
Seating- The Long family, invited dignitaries, and Bennington Rescue Squad crews will be seated near the front of the gymnasium. Members of other departments will be seated in chairs on the gym floor, or on bleachers in the back of the gym.
Reception- All persons are invited to stay following the ceremonies for a reception with refreshments.
RSVP- To assist with logistics, it will be very helpful to know an approximate count of persons and emergency vehicles planning be a part of the procession or on attending the funeral service. Please have the Chief of Service send an e-mail with the subject: Funeral to bennrenresq@comcast.net by 1500 Friday June 19th. Include the name of your department, a personnel count, and the type of vehicle for the processional in your message. Please feel free to attend the services even if you are unable to RSVP in advance.
Final Call- During the service, there will be a final dispatch tone on 155.205 MHz followed by a moment of silence in Dale's honor. For attendees with portable radios equipped with this frequency, please bring them and leave them off until asked to turn them at the end of the ceremony.
Overnight Housing- Units from outside the area sending delegations that may wish to stay overnight will be able to find motel accommodations in Bennington, Manchester, Arlington, or Williamstown.
Donations in Dale’s memory- Donations may be made in Dale’s memory to: Bennington Rescue Squad, Inc. 120 McKinley Street, Bennington, VT 05201. Funds received will be used to establish the Dale R. Long Memorial scholarship.
